Signs Your Air Conditioner Needs Replacing

Replacing your unit is a very high cost for any homeowner and should not be taken lightly. If you are thinking about a replacement unit, call your local technicians and see what they can do for you. Some of the reasons listed below are the reasons you may want to look into replacing your air conditioning unit sooner rather than later.

Always Breaking Down

Coming home to a hot house regularly can be a massive headache. If you have to call a technician to your home to repair your ac unit over and over again, you should look into replacing the entire unit. Most HVAC units require repairs repeatedly because they are nearing the end of their usable life span.

Frequent breakdowns also mean frequent repairs, and the cost of these repairs can add up quickly. You should say no more repairs and save the repair money and put it towards a new unit at a certain point.

Age

This may seem like an obvious reason, but if your AC is getting on up there in age, you should start preparing to purchase a new unit. Air conditioners are often outdoors and exposed to extreme temperatures throughout the year; this can shorten the lifespan. Modern air conditioners last around 15-20 years, while an older air conditioner can last approximately 10-12 years. So if your AC is older than ten years old, it might be time for a new one.

R22 Freon Unit

As of January 1, 2020, freon will no longer be produced in the United States. Why this may not sound like a big deal to you,but it could affect your home more than you know. If you own an air conditioner unit over ten years old, it likely uses a refrigerant known as R-22 Freon. R-22 Freon is known to have adverse effects on the environment, and the U.S. Protection Agency is phasing it out of use.

If your AC uses Freon, there is no need to panic. You can still use the unit; it may just be time for you to start preparing for a replacement. If your AC is to suffer a breakdown after 2020 and needs a freon refill for a repair, there will be none available. At that time, you will have to replace your old AC unit with one that does not use the R-22.>h2>High Energy Bills

Your energy bill should run about the same each month; it can fluctuate a little each month if the temperatures are extreme. If your energy habits are staying the same, but you see your energy bill rising higher and higher each month, it might be time for a new air conditioner.

Higher energy bills could mean that your air conditioner is either malfunctioning or losing efficiency. Energy bills can also start to rise as the unit gets older and works harder to keep up. Receiving a high bill one or two times is no need for alarm. However, if your energy bills keep going up and up, a replacement might be your only option.
