Is It Time to Replace Your Air Conditioner?
Instead of paying time and time again for expensive repairs, you may need to consider replacing your air conditioner.
Because this can be a costly purchase, it is important to carefully weigh your options. A new, energy-efficient system might actually save you money in the long run, particularly if you do not have to pay for the continual repair of an older unit.
Signs Your Air Conditioner Needs to Be Replaced
When an air conditioner is nearing the end of it's life cycle, there will be signs that can help you plan for a replacement. Some common reasons for A/C replacement include:
- Continual Breakdowns – If your air conditioning is starting to break down on a frequent basis, it may make more economic sense to replace the unit instead of investing money to put new parts in an old central A/C system.
- Age – Most home air conditioning equipment will last about 15 years if it has been properly maintained. As A/C units age, parts wear out, seals begin to fail and motors are not as strong as they once were. If your home's air conditioning system is 10 or more years old, it might be a good idea to consider replacing it in the next few years.
- R22 Freon Units – If your home's air conditioning is running on R22 refrigerant, the cost to obtain it will be rising in years to come. The federal government will be eventually phasing out R22 freon for use in A/C compressors, which may cause the cost of the product to go up dramatically. It may be much more economical to replace your system with one that uses the more modern R410A freon.
